Last Year's Marching Band
Would you like to help the School Marching Band?
Independence Day in Utila, Honduras is a big event with a parade and marching bands. Our daughter's band is asking for help with donations for their uniforms and for their trainer.
The whole event will cost about $3000 or more. However, we the parents, are raising money and doing bake sales, food sales, used clothes sales, etc., to make up the rest of the funds. We are just asking for help with $1500 to outfit the 32 kids from 5th grade and up, and help pay for their trainer's expenses.
On a small island, there aren't many organized activities for the children, or sporting clubs. This event makes the kids work so hard towards a common goal, teaches them discipline and teamwork. They are practicing up to midnight sometimes, and 6-8 hours a day. The children attend school from 7am to 3pm and still have the energy and will to practice hard for several hours afterwards, They are Superstars.
Take a look at last year's video on the left and see if you can help out. Every dollar counts, and we are more than grateful for $1 donation, will meet our goal if all my facebook friends donate $2, and ecstatic if you can help with more!. It will all add up!
The band will continue after the 15th of September to compete around the country, so the uniforms and funds will go a long way to helping children and promoting the island and our youth.
Please can you help them out? Help spread the word!

Free Concerts for Utila
An Octet from the National Philharmonic plays free concerts in Utila October 10-13th, 2014
What started out as a tentative approach to bringing Chamber Music to Utila has grown into a beautiful example of community. Over FIFTY, yes FIFTY businesses have donated more than 80 prizes, time, lodging, food, funds, personnel and so much more to bring an octet from the Honduran National Philharmonic Orchestra to Utila to play free concerts all around the island.
David Araya (solo clarinet in the YouTube video below) wanted to come with a quartet to Utila. But with the outpouring of charity it was clear that we could bring an octet from the Honduran National Philharmonic to Utila this October. The event finalized into an octet plus a conductor coming from the Honduran National Philharmonic Orchestra to Utila to play free concerts all over the island.
Support was so immense with tons of businesses donating for the groups' accommodations, meals, and a raffle to raise funds for their expenses that there is money left over to work on bringing them back soon! Ultimately, trying to get the entire National Philharmonic Orchestra here to Utila one day!
Where else in the world can you find a community that bands together like Utila to bring more beauty to her island? Not many places I'm guessing.
Special thanks go to:
Hedman Alas - for bringing the octet round-trip from Tegucigalpa to La Ceiba and back, and for providing two bus tickets anywhere in Honduras for the raffle.
Utila Princess - for providing round-trip transportation from La Ceiba to Utila and back for the octet.
Colibri Hotel - for putting up half the orchestra in the hotel for free
Laguna Vista - for putting up half the orchestra in one of the nicest places on the island for free
Camilla's Bakery - for providing breakfast free for the entire group
For El Castillo, the Mango Inn Bar & Grill, the Jungle Café, Underwater Vision and Neptuno's for providing meals for part or all of the group.
Naomi Jackson from the HotSpot Café and Tourist Information Center for volunteering to sell refreshments during the concerts!
JJ King and Eric Johnson for helping with the sound system.
Victor Lobo and the youth group for helping with the set-up and children's concert and providing the kids with a little snack.
Lisa Barry, Monica Perez, and all the sponsors and volunteers who helped make this happen!
A round of applause goes to Utila! And to the wonderful orchestra! Thank you all!
Brought to you by Toni & Jo from Laguna Vista and The Gardens, and RE/MAX Agent Julie Shigetomi.
