Whether you’re coming for the reef, the real estate, or a reset – Utila is always worth the trip. This updated guide covers everything you need to know for a smooth arrival and stress-free start to your time on the island.

⚠️ Travel Delays & Cancellations: TSA Staffing Issues

If you’re traveling through/from the U.S., be aware that ongoing TSA staffing shortages are causing longer security lines, missed connections, and occasional flight delays or cancellations, especially during peak hours.

Arrive at the airport at least 2.5 to 3 hours before international flights.
Check your airline app for gate changes or schedule updates.
✅ Consider booking earlier flights in case of rolling delays.

Give yourself extra time and patience at major hubs like Miami, Houston, or Atlanta, which are seeing the biggest impacts. Many airlines are offering full refunds for flights scheduled this week, that were booked prior to November 5, 2025.

I had a flight scheduled to leave Wednesday Nov 12th, from Roatan to Houston, via Miami, where I was to attend the National Association of Realtor’s (NAR) conference in representation of CANABIRH (our Honduran association of realtors). Unfortunately I had to cancel my flight, since I only had 2 hours to connect in Miami, and that’s already tight. Worrying about the current delays and short-staffing of TSA, I didn’t want to be stranded in Miami for days.  Luckily I am entitled to a full refund, and I got that with just a click of a button on the American Airlines website.

1. 🚫 Measles Vaccination Requirement Waived for Foreign Travelers

Honduras briefly announced a measles vaccination (MMR – Measles, Mumps & Rubella) requirement in July 2025—but this has since been officially waived for international travelers.

Only Honduran children aged 12 months to 10 years traveling to certain countries must show proof of vaccination. No action is needed for foreign visitors entering Honduras.

Still, it’s smart to stay up to date on routine vaccines before any international travel.

2. ✍️ Complete the Online Customs Form

QR Code for Honduras Customs Form

Honduras now requires all travelers to submit a digital customs form before entering the country. Paper forms are no longer accepted, even if handed out by airline staff. Scan or click on the QR code here, to access the online customs form.

We just travelled last week from Madrid, Spain, and they wouldn’t let us check in until we showed her the QR code. The wifi was spotty, so it was a nightmare to do that at the airport with all our luggage and line-ups. So do yourself a favor and fill it out before you get to the airport.

📅 The form must be completed within 5 days of arrival.
🔗 Fill it out here: Online Customs Form

💡 Tips for smoother submission:

  • Screenshot your QR code once submitted—airport Wi-Fi can be unreliable. Can’t connect? Ask someone in the “residents & nationals only” line to share their hotspot. People are super friendly here, so someone will help you!

  • Europeans: Some travelers need to use a VPN to access the site.

  • If the form will not submit, try making your destination address more specific, or it could be that you’re trying to access the form more than 5 days from your travel date.

Need more help? Use the dropdown at the top center, to change the language to “English” and format to “en_US”.

Airport Name Tip: They now list city names in the airport field (e.g., Roatán = Juan Manuel Galvez), so it’s easier to find your arrival airport.

⚠️ Error Messages? Or no message? Sometimes it’s because of the destination address isn’t specific enough. Try “Hotel Name, Street Name, Utila”.

Most travelers fly into Roatán and take the ferry or a quick 15 min. charter flight to Utila. Try to land before 1:00 PM to make the 2:00 PM ferry. The ferry leaves at 2:15pm on Saturdays, giving you an extra 15 minutes!

🧭 Tip: Saturday-to-Saturday bookings often line up well with Roatán arrival times and charter options.

✈️ International Flights to San Pedro Sula (SAP) – Updated November 1, 2025

San Pedro Sula (SAP – Ramón Villeda Morales) is a major hub. Travelers typically transfer to La Ceiba by bus, taxi, or local flight, then take the ferry to Utila. Although flights may be cheaper, remember that you’re two hops away from Utila. And keep in mind that the Utila airport isn’t in service at the moment.

4. 🚢 Utila Ferry Schedule (Roatán–Utila)

There are now two ferry options between Roatán and Utila:

🚢 Honduras Dream Ferries

**NEW** Roatán → Utila: Departs 2:15 PM on Saturdays, arrives around 3:15 PM.

  • Roatán → Utila: Departs 2:00 PM Sunday to Friday, arrives around 3:00 PM.
  • Book online for a 10% discount and screenshot your confirmation.

I missed the ferry and had to overnight in Roatan, so I took the ferry at 6:30am from Roatan to La Ceiba, and then the 9:00am ferry from La Ceiba to Utila. It got me there 5 hours earlier than the direct ferry, and I was so happy to do that! Consider this option if you’ve only got a week’s vacation and every Utila minute counts!!!

6. ✈️ Yellow Fever Vaccination Check

A few years ago, our family vacation to Panama was nearly derailed before it even began.
We were packed, ready, and excited—but we were almost not allowed to board our flight from Honduras. The reason? We didn’t have our Yellow Fever vaccination.

🌍 If You’re Traveling to Panama or Beyond, Take Note:

If your travels include Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, any South American country, or many parts of Africa, you’ll need to show proof of Yellow Fever vaccination—and it must be at least 10 days old before your departure from Honduras.

This requirement is enforced for both Honduran citizens and international travelers entering or exiting the country.

Yellow Fever vaccine travel requirements for Honduras showing countries where vaccination is needed, including Brazil, Colombia, Panama, and parts of Africa. Includes tips on getting vaccinated, carrying proof, exemptions for travelers over 60, and Honduras INM contact info.

✅ What You Should Do Before You Travel

  • Get your Yellow Fever vaccine well in advance

  • Ensure your vaccination card is valid and accessible

  • Confirm re-entry rules for your home country

  • Keep copies (digital and physical) with your travel documents

📞 For official guidance within Honduras, contact INM at 2232-7800

This was a valuable lesson for us, and one that could save you major stress. Travel requirements vary by country and are updated often, especially regarding public health. Taking a few extra minutes to confirm what’s needed for your destination can make all the difference between a smooth takeoff and a missed trip.

🏫 Mask-Wearing May be Required

It seems that these measures are currently not being enforced in Utila, Roatan, San Pedro Sula or La Ceiba when I visited those locations. Just be aware that they may drop or enforce these measures at any time, and it’s always best to be prepared, just in case.

✈️ Final Thoughts

Before you pack your bags and head to Utila, don’t forget to double-check your passport! To avoid any last-minute airport surprises, make sure:

✅ Your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.
✅ Your passport has at least 2 blank pages for entry and exit stamps.

Having these essentials ready will help ensure a smooth arrival in Honduras and a stress-free start to your island adventure!

That’s it for now—this guide will keep getting updates as the year rolls on. Until then, travel smart, book early, and don’t forget your snorkel gear, reef-safe sunscreen & a hat. Utila is calling! We hope  you find this useful and please send us a DM your personal experiences to help everyone.
